FAQ

Q. My mind in the past has been too busy for meditation. Will this work for me?

A. The Vedic meditation technique has been designed for people with busy minds. Thoughts are actually a part of the process and there is no need to try and stop thinking. We use a mantra as an anchor to naturally draw the mind in. It is an effortless practice and there is no concentration or effort required. With proper instruction the whole process is easy and automatic.

Q. What is a mantra?

A. A mantra in vedic meditation is a meaningless sound with a particular vibration that has a charming resonance to the mind. It is used as an anchor to help guide the mind into a deep state of rest (transcendence).

Q. I have a very busy life, how long will this take me each day?

A. The busier we are, the more we need a tool for rest, recovery and productivity. Without adequate rest life is a struggle. Things become more difficult, simple daily tasks that are typically easy become a real effort and it is so hard to find the joy and beauty in life through a lens of exhaustion. The optimum time commitment with practising Vedic Meditation is 20 minutes, twice a day. That’s around 3% of your day invested in rest to enhance the other 97%.

Q. Do I have to sit cross legged?

A. Absolutely not. In Vedic meditation you sit upright with your back supported in a position comfortable for you.

Q. Is vedic meditation a religion?

A. No. Vedic meditation is a simple mental technique designed to give the body deep rest and dissolve accumulated stress, tension and fatigue. It’s not necessary to believe anything in order to practice and enjoy the benefits. People from many different religions and cultures practice VM.

Q. How long until I will see results?

A. The benefits will begin from your first meditation and are cumulative over time. Most people report feeling calmer, having more energy and mental clarity in the first week they start meditating. Others notice the benefits unfold more gradually over time. Everyone is at a different starting point in terms of stress and fatigue when they first learn to meditate so while the benefits begin straight away, how quickly one notices will vary.

Q. I already have a practice, will this conflict?

A. There are many different practices out there, and they are all great for their specific intended outcomes. There is absolutely no conflict with other techniques. VM is a simple mental technique that when practised properly will enhance whatever else you are doing.

Q. What is transcendence?

A. Transcendence is the fourth state of consciousness where one has moved beyond the waking, sleeping and dreaming states and into a state of restful alertness.

Q. Can I learn to meditate when I am pregnant?

A. Pregnancy is a brilliant time to practice VM. When you’re pregnant the body is going through a significant amount of change daily so the high quality rest experienced through meditation is highly beneficial.

Q. How is vedic meditation different to other meditation techniques?

A. Other types of meditation usually involve concentration or control of the mind in some way. VM on the other hand is a simple and effortless style that absolutely anyone can learn. There is no need to control the mind or body or to rid the mind of thoughts. It is a letting go technique which delivers deep rest to the body and dissolves accumulated stress, tension and fatigue.
